Exploring George Street Wood

A new generation of naturalists is following in the footsteps of the much admired David Attenborough.

Clad in wellies and suitable clothing, a group of toddlers 2 to 4 years old regularly meets at The Soup Seller in Glossop to set off with their parents and explore George Street Wood opposite the Health Care Centre.

The children hunt for treasure and search for minibeasts during their visits. They also collect twigs, leaves, moss and berries for craft activities - to make stick men, miniature trees, festive decorations and much more.

The group is led by Helena Broadbent who runs similar groups in Delamere Forest, Cheshire. Helena, who lives in Glossop, said "The children love scrambling through George Street Wood."

"It's a wonderful place for them to play together and learn about Nature in a fun way. We've enjoyed seeing the woodland change through the Autumn and are looking forward to the magic of Spring."

"Parents are delighted to encourage their children out of doors and we hope to develop a lifelong interest in the natural world."

Michael Hirst of Friends of George Street Wood added "Hopefully it will be possible for Helena to set up an after-school group for older children."

"Activities like this are precisely why the campaign to protect the Wood and preserve public access will continue despite the efforts of one individual who is determined to develop the site for his own financial gain."

If you would like to join the George Street Wood Explorers, please book with The Soup Seller, 73 High Street West where the group meets for refreshments. Each session costs £4 which includes marshmallow toasting at the café as well as craft materials for the children.

The next session is on Friday 10 January from 1.30pm to 3pm and then every fortnight at the same time. Birthday party bookings in the Wood can also be arranged.

Note to the editor

Please contact Helena Broadbent for further information. She has obtained parents' consent to take photographs of the children and to use them in publicity about the group.
